Historical fiction

I've recently become obsessed with reading romantic historical fictions after reading 'The Other Boleyn Girl' by Phillippa Gregory, and since then I've been hungry to find some more! I have read a few, including 'Katherine' by Anya Seton and 'The Memoirs of Cleopatra' by Margaret George, as well as most of Phillippa Gregory's novels.

Are there any more books that anyone can recommend?

Also, which do people prefer: 'Emma' or 'Pride and Prejudice'?

Scroll down until you come to Historical and then you can browse books and authors .Can't really point you in the right direction for historical fiction as I prefer historical biographies. A great fan of anything about Mary Queen of Scots I recently read My Heart is my Own by John Guy .Try it ..it may surprise you.

I have no preference on the other two ! Love them both .

Some years back I read historical novels by Jean Plaidy. They were actually based on fact but were written in such a way that they were extremely interesting, so if you like reading about past Kings and Queens then give her a try, she also wrote under another name but I can't remember it.

I think she wrote under the names of Victoria Holt and Phillipa Carr. Do you know that is a blast from the past !
I used to read her books many many moons as a schoolgirl !!

What I did read recently which I suppose is historical fiction ,as we don't really know that much about her, were the Boudica books by Manda Scott starting with Dreaming the Eagle ..you may like those.

The Spanish Bride by Georgette Heyer is the true story of Juana Smith who met and married Harry Smith after the siege of Badajoz at the age of 14. She gained eternal fame in later life in that Ladysmith in Africa was named for her.

Georgette Heyer wrote loads of books set in the Regency period and they are all fantastic reads - characters that you really care about, particular favourites of mine are The Grand Sophy, Fridays Child, Charity Girl. The characters are fictional though but GH researched that period well so the settings/background are based on real people/places and events.

Also the Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell are great (you know Sharpe as in Sean Bean!!!) Many of the stories are based on actual events.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Perdita but I can't remeber who it's by and if I go and look I'll lose this post, but stick Perdita in amazon it will come up. She was the mistress of the The Prince Regent before he met Mrs Fitzherbert.
