Being a south london lad, we always pronounced Samuel Pepys' surname as 'Peppies' my wife insists its Peeps. We had Pepys Road, Park & even Pepys House @ my school. Who's right - or do I need to get out more?
My Dad was a South London boy too, and went to Samuel Pepys School from 1957-1961 and it is definitely pronounced 'Peeps'. Looks like Mrs. Paulz's got it right!
Looks like I'm outnumbered so far, won't be printing this off for Mrs P. And sddsddean I used to like in Brockley, where we had Pepys Park, Road & Samuel Pepys School [where Chris Tarrant was a teacher] to the best of my fading memory they we all pronounced Peppies Thanks all
I also was a South London boy, and went to Samuel Pepys school for about 2 terms in 1960 and it was indeed pronounced Peeps,,,,,,,,,Sorry if that upsets anyone.
I'm Spanish but had a native English teacher (Professor in English Literature) at university, and she taught us Samuel Pepys' name is pronounced "peeps". Best wishes to all.
