how did a cat come to be awarded a medal in ww2

In 1949. 'Simon', the cat aboard HMS Amethyst, was promoted to Able Seaman, and was awarded the Dicken Medal 'For Gallantry'.

Only one I can find is a cat called Simon awarded the Dicken Medal (animals VC). He was on the Amethyst during the Yangste Incident- tho this was in 1949.

however- there was a cat called Jim awarded the Blue Cross medal in 1942 if we are sticking to WW2.....

During 1942 in Malden, Essex, south-east England, an area subject to heavy bombing, a 19-year-old cat called Jim saved his owners when their house caught fire. He ran upstairs and woke them in time for them to be able to get up and get the fire under control. Jim was awarded the Blue Cross Medal which was instituted for animals that had helped to save human lives and was only sparingly given.

Aaaaaahhhhhhh! i read the story of Abel Seacat Simon! What a MUFFIN!!! His story made me laugh and cry(sniff, meep!) Dont you just love animals! They are precious and amazing and all deserve medals for putting up with us looney humans.
