The USA was interested in the resources of these countries, mainly sugar and tobacco, not only for consumption but also to invest in them financially. However, Cuba and most of the other Caribbean islands were then ruled by Spain, which put restrictions on foreign investment and interference. So the USA supported the growing movements for independence that was spreading throughout the area. Encouraged by America's example, the Spanish colonies sought to throw off colonial rule. America encouraged this, nominally under the pretext of spreading ideals of liberty and democracy, but there was an underlying motive of seeking business interests.
