1891 Census Newcastle-under-Lyme
30 Answers
I'm researching the Birch family from Newcastle-under-Lyme and can find them in the 1881 and 1901 censuses but nothing comes up for any of them in 1891. I can't understand it - does anyone know if the 1891 N-u-L census was destroyed in some way?

Which i think would make Joseph the son of Rupert and Edith Birch who was baptised at Ipstones in 1838. With brother Charles and sister Olive i think. rupert's father was Joseph too and so that may well be correct.
Emma was baptised 30th august 1847 daughter of michael and Alice Johnson nee Wooliscroft. There is a really confusing differences in the ages given in these returns.

You're a star, Craft. You can see why my head was hurting. As you point out, there's also differences in the ages of Joseph and Emma and then one of Paul's brothers, Alfred, married his widow, Rosanna, after he was killed in 1917.
Sorry, I logged off quickly to go out yesterday and failed to take in that you'd supplied the details on the 1891 census and that Paul was still at home.
I'm now going to list everybody and try and settle all these dates once and for all.
By the way, we know that James was also killed in a mining accident so we're still looking into that.
Many, many thanks.
