my father served with the army in the war with the japanese, he was held prisoner, how do I go about finding information about this

When I first read this I thought you were saying he fought WITH the Japanese (in the Japanese army).

Only when I reread it did I realise you meant "in the WAR with the Japanese"
Try the COFEPOW website. (Children of Far East Prisoners of War). Loads of info. Names/ranks of POWs - where they were captured and subsequently held. Names of the hell ships in which they were taken to Japan, etc etc. I found my dad.
