Whilst living in the Midwest of America, I continued bird watching (when I could) but also picked some great new sports. At that time, water skiing was my favourite new activity, but I also spent about three years skydiving and nothing can quite match that for excitement! I finally hung up my wings after a particular jump when my main parachute failed to open. This serious malfunction was entirely my fault! I had sewn on a rip cord mounting cone slightly off the straight. Any engineer would have known it wouldn’t work, but (as a classics scholar) I only had Icarus as a role model!
After 25 years in the USA and becoming a US citizen, raising a son and a daughter, my wife and I divorced. Consequently, I returned to the UK to marry an absolute English rose whom I had dated back in the 50’s, when I was a student accountant in London -- but that's another story! It was a triumph for Cupid and his little bow and arrow. That brings me in a somewhat contrived manner to my most favourite sport: Archery! In my youth, I was a young member of the Royal Toxophilite Society and Archery has brought me endless hours of immense enjoyment.
