help with very old address

have found some relatives on the 1901 census who lived at six cottages in ashington northumberland, as i know the area well this does not ring a bell at all so can anybody help with where it was in ashington i think it has maybe been knocked down or even the street name changed, thanx

yes sorry thought that was obvious, it was number 5 six cottages

If you try http://www.old-maps.co.uk , put 'ashington' in the search and find the northumberland ashington --- work through the archive maps offered -- it seems that by the late 1890's part of the new village was named by numbers. They seem to be 'Sixth Row' etc rather than cottage but for my money the coincidence is too great - I think that's your address on the map.

thanx, but what a coincidence as my nan ended up living in northumberland close when she was about 80 and it was her mam who had lived in six cottages when she was a teenager, i do know that alot of mining villages had streets called rows like third row fourth row etc and these are still in use in ashington today so thanx very much

St the start of the enumeration district there was an enumerators route description, which will help you pinpoint the location exactly in relation to the area, the Six Cottages on the 1901 census are in district 20, ( the description of the route is at RG13 4835 folio 58), and the route is as follows:
The Tenth Eleventh Fifth and Sixth rows Ashington Colliery, Recreation Cottage and the Six Cottages near the Pit.

The Boundary to the Enumeration District is as follows: On the north by the Pit Shaft and the Coal Line, On the East by the Newbiggin branch of the N.E. Railway,;On the South by the Ninth Row; and on the South by the road from Mr Southron;s House to the pit shaft.
