How rot resistant is green oak? My local carpenter tells me that there is no point in treating it, as it already has resistance much higher than softwood treated with creosote.

That's quite right Aqua. Although it's not good to let it stand in water. Oak posts are usually mounted on a stone plinth or similar.

Pressure treated softwood will still be good after many years of being buried. Oak has a similar lifespan.

Thanks for your confirmation, Builder Man. I have a flight of sleeper steps at the bottom of my garden and the softwood blocks supporting them are quite rotten after just five years.
I'm replacing them with green oak blocks - let's hope they last a little longer!
