A chap has just offered to coat the lead flashing and fibre glass canopy over the bay at the front of our 15 year old house. Got me thinking that the result would be only cosmetic as there are NO leeks. Got me thinking also that I could do it myself ,as I am quite capable, but what with I ask.Ordinary paint flakes off lead and I would not like to paint the canopy anless I was sure it would stay on!

Any thoughts please Chris

I wouldn't paint any of it, Joe.

Clean the lead in the usual way......... detergent, scouring pads,.... that sort of thing. Then see if you can find (Builders' Merchants or Roofing Store) something called "Patination Oil".
Rub some into clean, dry lead, with a piece of cloth. It gives the lead a glow that helps resisting acid attack and discolouring.
Repeat any time you fancy.

If the canopy is fibreglass, then treat it as you would a car body. Car products such as "T-Cut", or cutting compound to bring the finish up. You could even wax it if you like.
