What happens if you tile over PAINTED tiles? I'm hoping not to have to hack off the existing tiles when I retile my bathroom, but the previous owners painted the tiles. If I slap another layer on, will they drop off? (I've done lots of tiling before, but never in this situation)

i dont think its possible to tile over tiles..they wont stick..i had some painted tiles and stripped the tile paint off..perhaps you could try that..if not then i am afraid you will have to remove them..
Just take off the paint and tile away! There is no reason why you can't tile over existing tiles. It's best to use non-slip adhesive. I tiled over old tiles in my small bathroom that gets full of steam and condensation with no problems in 2 years.

Thanks, Jake, I've had a look at the link you suggest.

Unfortunately there's lots of info on both tiling over tiles and on painting tiles, but my specific problem is tiling over PAINTED tiles. There's very little advice out there on whether tile paint should be removed/not removed/scarified before adding another layer of tiles - and when this problem gets mentioned, the advice is conflicting. Hmm ... best just cross my fingers, I guess.
