Instead of sanding anf priming, try a couple of coats of undercoat. It worked for me on a repro corner unit that had been varnished.
You will have to give it a good wash first to get any greasy marks off it so why not use liquid sander and that will do the 2 jobs at the same time. If they haven't been painted before you could then use a primer/undercoat, followed by the top coat.
Primers and undercoats help the top layer paint to adhere to the surface. They won't remove blemishes like sanding will. But if the doors already look ok it may be all you need. If you don't like the result you can always start again.
You can use chalk paint, you don't need an undercoat just a good clean first, you will need a wax topcoat or it will peel off over time but it's very easy to do.

Chalk paint and wax are available at most DIY places now ( it used to be quite hard to get). I use it all the time for upcycling all the time.
Wipe down with white spirit and prime with a coat of Zinser 123...you can then top coat with most finishes.
sorry, it's not really answering the question, but did you know you can get magnetic paint? it might be nice to use as the kids can then use magnets to put any drawings on the cupboards without leaving pin marks
tandh, have you tried it? that stuff gets dreadful reviews
oh no, really woofgang? i haven't tried it, but i've seen it in b and q and i thought it was such a good idea. Maybe check the reviews before you buy one then rose and lily

this one seems to have the best reviews, but it looks like its much harder and messy to apply than normal paint. I think it will be worth a try, i would of loved something like this when i was little
