Before you make a move Kloof. what are the doors made of? Timber. Veneered block, vinyl shrink covered MDF, laminate? All these materials will need approaching in a different way if you are looking for a long term solution. Which I assume you are when you stipulate hard wearing. Also think about the work required to match all end panels, plinth(kick boards) and any Cornice and pelmet fitted to the wall units.
It is wood, proper wood.Ihad them done three years ago,got advice from here then.Got a professional decorator to do it whilst away on hols.Doors were took off etc.Really good job done, satin finish then clear water based varnish to finish ,but with constant use, around the door knobs etc..getting a bit "chipped",on a couple of them.Have been touching them up there but feel better to have them re-done when on hols this year. The paint Chico suggests sounds good as it is for kitchen cupboards,so as I am having them done.might as well try it
Thank you for all your advice

Yes Togo,I always check things out properly, when I had it first done,it was like a new kitchen, beautifully done, everything matched colourwise.New knobs and drawer handles as well.I really need back plates on the knobs but have not been able to find suitable ones, the right size, just plain black,I keep looking and will eventually find them .They would have prevented the little chips around the knobs.I like things to be done "perfect ".My decorator is a perfectionist, worth ever penny.
