I have started to paint a little today. I have painted a mahogany unit which was fading as in paint. It's now drying.

What I want to do is paint my window sills however paint is half off and on and cracked per se.

What can I do before buying an electric gadget which will never be used again. Any tips please

Rub it off with sand paper no need for electric gadgets
Question Author
it is quite thick - the paint on the sills but right now it is awful looking and do need this done today.

I am imagining the sand paper wouldn't be strong enough
Buy some paint-removing liquid/gel. Then scrape the old paint off...
Well if you don't want to buy an electrical gadget then it will be very hard work. Either use paintstripper to take it all off and start again or use sandpaper on a block - both very time consuming. The easiest is to buy a small electric sander, they are not expensive and always come in handy.
All this of course if you want a smooth finish at the end.

I have 5 window sills at bottom of house 2 of them very long as in size of shop window
Question Author
Jack I bought that some years ago and it never worked - the guys in the DIY told me something like this that the very strong stuff that was in the paint stripper was removed thru health and safety.
Buy a sander, Conne.

think will go for the electric sander - now I want a cheaper - maybe £10 LOL - anybody advise there.

We do have a diy shop about a mile where I live who hire like big mixers, petrol lawnmowers etc - was wondering would they hire an electric sander
Given your health and your reduce mobility I would have thought that you are better off getting a man in to do it.
If you haven't even got the stuff yet I doubt you will get it done today. It's hard work. I'd get a decorator in.

I'm in the mode Islay because of the lovely weather I am going to do this - the sills are quite low. So perhaps of my reduced mobility will go for the wee leccy sander

Mahogany unit turned out absolutely beautiful. I had bought wrong paint ages ago - but neighbour had the perfect paint.

Then I have sanded and scraped all the window sills. The electric sander was no good and so I had to use boiling kettles of water which loosened the paint. I had also bought the paint remover (bottled stuff) absolutely hopeless and I had hears some years ago they had removed the real macoy out of it that really lifted the paint. I had bought two bottles so brought one back.

At the mo taking a little rest as they have been undercoated and glossed (front). Will be going to back of house to finish off the gloss. I feel satisfied LOL
