So the ring is probably mild steel then? Supposedly, it's some kind of retainer to hold the other things in place.

I must admit that, if it were me, I'd try to trace where these things come from, and where they go. That would only be out of pure curiosity though.

Ha ha, I've filled it in builder. It'll be forever a mystery ;0)

What I thought was wire running through it was actually some kind of metal too I think, it didn't go silver, stayed the same colour.
