I want to remove some supports and replace then with ones that will clear the middle of the loft to create a work space.
Are there any web sites that show drawings of how to support the roof again.
Our house was built in 1953 so is not a modern truss roof design

if you dont know what to do and you need to ask on here, get a builder in to tell you,or you could end up having to pay out thousands if it all goes wrong, get a estimate and outline plans from him and go from there.
You are likely to have a cut roof with purlins (long horizontal timbers mid-way up that hold the rafters) that was built from scratch on-site, so doing this should be possible. However you can't do this yourself and you certainly shouldn't ask a builder! You need to talk to a Structural Engineer who will inspect the existing structure and calculate the forces created by the roof loading. These intermediate timbers are there for a purpose. Depending on what you are doing, you may need to make a Building Control application - your Structural Engineer will advise.
Buildersmate is correct on this one you might also need planning consent. Also if you ever want to sell your home you will need to show that you dealt with this correctly
