I am about to have an old victorian house re-roofed. I have has 2 quotes for traditional slate fixed on with hooks. Can you tell me why they use hooks as I don't particularly like the look of them as they stick out underneath. Is it a cost or strength issue? Obviously that will have to be considered but I don't want to compromise on the original look of the house. Thanks.
Clips or hooks are used in some areas to prevent lifting. But they are unsightly. It is much more usual to copper nail slates There are two methods of nailing, one known as "centre nailing" and the other known as "head nailing" depending on the type of roof. I would just ask your roofers to re-quote for copper nailing appropriate to your type of roof.
