as my floor is slightly uneven i am putting hardboard down to level it out before laying the self adhesive vinyl floor planks, and have been advised to seal the hardboard with pva first just incase there is a water leak as they are being installed in kitchen, so need to know if anyone else has done this and does doing it either help the tiles stick any better or any worse, thanx

Anything you can do to make the subfloor clean, smooth and firm will enhance the look of you finished floor. I'm not sure the coating your are describing will help in the event of spilled water, since the water would likely lift the tiles anyway. However, if the floor on which you are going to install the tiles is an older wooden floor, assure that all nail heads are countersunk and not loose. Make sure all the seams in the subfloor are smooth and very clean. Make sure there are no splintered or damaged areas and then go ahead with your sealant. At the very least I always recommend a good primer coat of primer type paint for the vinyl to adhere to. Best of luck!
Try to get hold of 'Oil Tempered Hardboard'. Not everyone stocks it, but it's what's recommended for laying viyl on top. The oil used in manufacture helps make it water resistant, and there's no need for PVA.
You can buy proper floor leveling compound from a builders supply which should do a better job.
