I have a very old shower unit. We inherited it from the previous owners. It is corroded and scaled in so that we can only put it on full blast boiling hot so I want to change it.
My question is are they all the same to plumb in? can I just go and get a shower mixer (no taps just shower with hot and cold and strenght dials). It's not a powershower or anything and just feeds of the main hot water tank?
I guess you have surface-mounted supply pipes (rather than buried-in-the-wall pipes)?
Even though such pipes are going to be easier to deal with, it won't be a straight remove one / refit the other job - there will be a bit of 'plumbing work' to do. Doesn't need a fully-fledged Polich plumber - just a competent handyman, if you want to keep costs down.

Then look at the cable you have already in the wall if its electric. If its a mixer, make sure the pressure is sufficient and consider a softener if you're in a hard water area.
