noisy central heating

I have moved into a house that is about 50 years old.  When the heating comes on, the pipes all round the house make very loud clanking banging noises.  Is this something I should be worried about?

It sounds to me like you have Borrowers living beneath your floorboards.

Try 'bleeding' the radiatiors to let air out of the system.

Air in the system....easily solved by bleeding the radiators....a 30 minute job at most.

[1] if you live in a hard water area it may be that your boiler is scaled, [2] could also be that system is very dirty [or both] advise you call local corgi installer, [3] may also be that the pump is old and althougth it is working it may not be running at the correct speed. unlikey to be air

It sound's like you have a circulation problem. The hot water might not be moving out of the boiler as quick as it will be heated. This will cause excess heat and excess expantion of the pipe work. This is where the banging is coming from. Turn the thermostat on the boiler down to 1 or 2 and see if the same thing happens. The under lying fault could be one of a few things;

Faulty boiler thermostat

Faulty gas valve

Faulty pump

Sludge build up in the radiators

Air lock in the pipework.
