Cast Iron Guttering

The house I am living in now has cast iron guttering. We only bought this house in 2007. Although now a days it seems very unusual to have cast iron guttering but it seemed OK until few weeks ago when I saw one of the bracket (clamp) holding the joint had broken and a small piece had fallen. Now it has started leaking from that point and I can see a small gap.

Problem is that when I found out I was told that it would cost around £1500 to replace it with plastic one. I am planning to have my loft converted but not until next year when financial situation will be better. So I want to hang on to it until then and get it done all in one go.

Now question is, that can I repair that damage some how? Can I buy a plastic joint and put it where it has broken? Or any other suggestion will be welcomed.

recliam builders yards have cast iron stuff use putty to seal joints

New cast iron guttering is used all the time Keyplus ................. cut out the broken bit and let in a short length or a jointer.
£1500? ............ get someone sensible to look at it lol

Love cast iron myself, and keep various bits about, blasted and painted ready to use.
Keep your eye open around old places being done up.
They often chuck it in skip and fit plastic.

just use milliput. I workd for drainage company and ok for short while, maybe you can get it all done under your building insurance

I'd repair that section with a refurbished, painted piece puttied in as original .. perfect job, for £150 in Northants.

Much depends on whether the gutter is half-round or a special shape. I replaced a side of very special shape and had a full match cast especially. Each 1.8m length cost £160 in material only and I put it up myself, but I needed scaffolding. I agree with what others have said - try to bridge the gap yourself or using someone to do it. The quote you have is on the high side but a lot depends on the length and shape of gutter.
