broken glass on walls

Would any-one know if it is okay to put pieces of broken glass on a garden fence. I live in an undesirable neighbourhood and would like to make sure my house is secure when I go away in a couple of months. Thank-you.

Remember that if, say, a child climbs into your garden to retrieve his ball, you could face a civil claim for compensation in respect of any injuries that he might incur. (Clearly displayed notices, warning of the hazard, might reduce your liability but they wouldn't automatically negate it).

Not advisable unfortunately, as even a trespasser would have a claim for any injury caused.

Very extreme flip!............not sure, but I think this is illegal, if not it should be!........you could injure someone's cat or wildlife, nevermind burglars!..........

Thank-you to all that answered. I just want to feel happy that my property is safe whilst I am away. I know I will spend the whole two weeks worrying about it otherwise. Thank-you for that link vulcan 42. It did look very interesting although I was put off when I read the following

I do not really see the point in this if it does not cause injury.
Someone mentioned barbed wire to me. Though I think this is very unsightly.

Eddie51. I did think about this but I just thought it would look a bit ugly. The fence is fairly high therefore I wouldn't really see the glass if I had it on there. I think I will do this but just make sure I put some kind of notice up as Buenchico suggested. Thank-you.

So if a child climbs the fence to retrieve a ball you would wish them an injury.!!

Even razor wire is a deterrent .. not a lacerating/killing device.
Unfortunately, this is what some folk have to do to protect their land/posessions in dodgy areas. Those of us who can leave doors unlocked and windows open at night without fear have to accept this .. and are lucky people.
If you do have to use it .. make sure is is not visible or touchable without climbing up, if next to highway/path.

Is it just me but surely if a child kicks a ball over the fence he should be asking the owner for permission to retrieve it not shinning over the fence/wall? Not that I think they should get cut to ribbons for doing so, but it is not acceptable in my opinion either to trespass.

I know it isn't the quick solution you are looking for, but I would suggest in the longer term growing some prickly plants, something like this:
