According to this link they can be grown in a greenhouse in UK

Funny, I was wondering this the other day as one of my friends informed me that they grew in the ground, who knew! Not sure where thought they grew though.
Here in the U.S., the four varieties of peanuts grown commercially require a long growing season of at least 150 days of warm weather. They also require about twenty-two inches of water during the growing season (Source University of Georgia).

The site further states that during the 150 growing season, soil and air temperature cannot be less than 56 degrees F and that an average of 86 degrees F is optimal.
They require a light colored, sandy soilas well... Although I'm not entirely familiar with the U.K.'s growing season, I would imagine that's the major reason the venerable peanut cannot be grown there...
There was an article about over-priced bird food in yesterday's Telegraph. Apparently, most of the peanuts come from China....
Clanad, at the moment the UK fits neither criteria too cold and too dry , we are in one of the worst droughts for years . Last year my area had 56% less rain fall than normal , so far this year we are 76% down.
My daughter tried to grow some and when they tried to go underground to fruit she staked them up, so no peanuts!!
