Pansy roots are infested by tiny white rod like insects. Any hints on identifying and getting rid of them would be much appreciated.

I had those in my containers of pansies too! I believe they're Vine weevils - horrible little pests.

Many thanks. I have had experience of vine weevils and these things are much smaller - less than 5mm, white and almost thread thin. They do not seem to be mobile and all the damage is below soil level. he plants are in shallow troughs.
sounds like they are nematode, they shouldn't cause any problems, see here.
