My mother-in-law's lawn is full of dandelions. We've tried Weed & Feed, but it's proved hopeless. Can anyone recommend something that will work?

Roundup have just brought out a new applicator so that you can apply it to individual weeds. Round up is not the fasting acting weed killer but it is one of the most effective.
As people have said before - Verdone. You spray it onto the leaves/flowers and it is absorbed into the plant and kills it. It doesn`t destroy the area around it, unlike Roundup which is fantstic but kills everything in it`s sight.
Dandelions have a long tap root. If you leave a bit in they will grow again. You have to be constantly on guard and as soon as you see them dig them up, before they flower if possible. If you keep on with digging and watering with Weed and Feed they will eventually give up, although if there are ripe dandelions about they will reseed themselves. Good idea to eat them, although they are a natural diuretic - when I was a child we called them pee the bed.

Ha ha! I'd forgotten that Starbuck. We called them wet-the-beds. I never knew why.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.
That's why roundup have bought this new applicator out 237SJ you can apply it to a single leaf on the weed and away you go, one dead weed and the nothing else affected.
They are quite a pretty flower if you look at them in that light, naomi. It's a pity they are such a prolific weed and take over the garden if you allow them.
Verdone works a treat. Just spot spray each plant and any other weeds that you don't want. There is no need to kill all the weeds as some such as clover can be quite attractive. You will have to do it again about a fortnight later as it becomes apparent which ones you missed the first time. Daisies, plantains and bittercress succumb quite well too.
En passant... You do know that the dandelions make an excellent salad when harvested young?
When theres a full moon dance around the garden at midnight with your OH
singing I believe, I believe......
Blimey, why would you want to ? A machine gun perhaps.
Verdone is made by Scotts, the very same company that Clanad is promoting.
Clanad's product has different active chemicals in it because chemical licencing on this side of the pond is different. The products would seem to be similar.

Cupid thanks for the suggestion, but I think I'll pass.

Looks like several recommend Verdone. I'll get some and try it this weekend. Thank you all.
If you can bear to not mow it for 2 weeks and pick the heads, I recommend this recipe for dandelion jam. It really is delish.

I do believe in digging them up, but give the plants to a local rabbit - they love them.
