Here in Swansea we have a marvelous public gardens, with an important collection of Rhododendrons and Azaleas. In late April and May they produce a stunning display of flowers.

But I was walking in the gardens yesterday and there were three Rhododendrons in flower ! Not "just-in-flower but huge blooms. Surely that is unusual for mid February ?

There is a wide range of varieties which cover a wide flowering period, from mid Feb to mid August,, one of the earliest seems to be R. mecabeanum

Thanks chips. It was such a surprise to find these in flower...just didn't expect it so early. Not even the daffs were out, just a few snowdrops and crocuses.
Yes mikey, It is surprising to see them so early!. I checked them out on the web and found about 4 that flower in winter and approx 20 or so that flower in spring & summer + a few more blooming right up til August.

I've noticed that Camellias like to flower early but often get damaged by frost.
