Grass

I have a very shady garden with a few big trees
Is there and grass that I can get that will grow in
dry shady conditions ... and.. out compete the weeds
I don't mind if the grass is like string. I'm not looking
for a bowling green just an alternative to concreting
it and painting it green

Have you thought about gravel? Not being funny, honest - but we had an area of poor grass and put gravel down instead. Much easier to look after.

I had thought about plastic grass or gravel but I thought real grass
would look nicer. I want to know what the council use for the grass
verge in my street. I'm seriously thinking of stealing it. They mow it
when it's soaking or snowing and churn it to mush but in a few days
it looks fine.

You should be able to find grass seed mixes, specially for use in shady areas, available at any good garden centre.

A mix containing 'Fescue' would fit the bill.
