Sure you can Sandy, but bamboo being a monocotyledon, you need some root on it.
If you can slice through a section of the root clump with a spade, then it is possible to grow it on.
I was looking at a cane that had grown through a gap in a fence. Don't think the householder would be happy if I arrived in the middle of the night and started digging in his garden.
Sorry Sandy, I had no way of knowing what kind of relationship you have with your neighbors, if it was my neighbor I'd just ask him for a piece of the clump.
Its customary to cross his palm with a bottle of bud though ;-)
Keeping the roots contained in a sink etc is a good tip!
It grows like the clappers sandy, but you need a root. We have two clumps - the roots are only a couple of inches below the ground. If you want, I can send you a young root - we're digging them up all the time. Tell me if you want one!
