Does Charcoal Help The Earth In The Garden

my neighbour incinerated some wood ,the remains look like charcoal , he has suggested i use it in the garden to improve the soil .....but will it ??

Does it contain Phosphogen that is good for soil?
I think you have to consider if it's "good" for the types of plants that you want to grow, not just if it's "good" for the soil.
Wood ash contains potassium, which can raise the PH level of the soil, so if you are growing,say... brassicas for instance, which grow well in alkaline conditions then yes the potash can be beneficial.
It needs to be thoroughly burnt down to ash though, not large lumps of charcoal.
