Green Tomatoes

Americans eat fried green tomatoes, are these a different type to the ones we get, or are they just unripe? I would think the latter would taste bitter.

According to Wiki, they are made with unripe tomatoes.

They are unripe so yes they taste different.

But you can get tomato varieties that are green when ripe. I grew (not overly successfully) some last year.
