Killing Ivy

Is there anything that will kill ivy please, we have it coming through the fence round our garden and its a pain, we have tried pulling out as much as we can but it just keeps coming back, is there something that we can spray it with that will kill it to the roots, the nieghbours are old and disabled and no longer do anything in the garden so we cant trouble them.

Roundup do a weed killer for that type of stuff,it doesn't work quickly and takes several doses but it does work.

I would explain the problem to your neighbours and ask if you can dig it up. You shouldn't really be poisoning a neighbours plant. If they approve, try Roundup gel spread on as many leaves as possible, it worked for me.

Any systemic weed killer..put it onto the leaves and it will poison the roots in time...

Some may have poured half to a litre of diesel in the soil. Works everytime, and not just ivy roots.

Murraymints, the biggest problem is glossy leaves, weedkiller runs off before it can be absorbed. I believe the RHS suggest Roundup Gel.

I have had success by cutting the ivy down hard and then waiting for the new shoots before treating. I used full strength glyphosate on a dry day and then I left it alone. I have found that if you cut the leaves off when it looks dead then that saves the roots and it shoots again, if you get impatient and re treat, that burns the leaves and again saves the root to grow again. It may take a whole growing season to see a result. If you do get regrowth the following year then do it again but persevere and you will succeed.

You need a systemic weedkiller, that will get right down the root of the plant.

As previously stated, treating the leaves is difficult due to their waxy nature, therefore painting a glyfosate gel directly on freshly cut stem surfaces may prove more effective.

Thank you all for your advise, seems we have to just keep on and on at it, putting gel on cut stems sounds a good plan so will try that next.
