Apparently, it seems some damage was caused when it threw the chain, therefore I would replace the chain with a new one, otherwise you may cause further damage to the bar or front and rear sprocket. Its easy to be wise after the event but keep an eye on the chain tension and keep it well lubricated. I cleaned my saw out the other day, put it all back together, then...

See if this helps.
Or this.

I cleaned my saw out the other day, put it all back together, then noticed the chain was on the wrong way round, so I had to take it all apart again ;-/
I'm using a bio oil for the chain at the mo and it clings well to the chain. Good luck!

Yes I was afraid that would be the solution. Oh well more care next time with tension. Thank you all for your replies
Thanks arabbadot,
I find that carrying a scrench close at hand, like my back pocket, gives me no excuse for not making the occasional adjustments when needed.
Hi arabbadot,
I don't think you mentioned if the chainsaw was a petrol or electric one.
Anyway this may or may not be relevant. I was helping a friend today cutting a pile of logs with his electric, black and decker chainsaw and while I stood there watching, I suddenly noticed the chain went slack (never seen that before) then the chain came off and after that the chain seemed to be sticking, so we took it apart again, everything looked okay but it still kept sticking.
any way to cut to the chase, we concluded the the problem was with the gearing mechanism, behind the sprocket, under the casing.
Hope that helps.
