Skimmias

Hi Green fingered AB-ers out there. I "inherited" two lovely skimmias from my late mother in law, and they have both been enjoying life in my back garden (in the West Midlands) since last March. I did read somewhere, I think, that skimmias do best when they are in pairs, that right? Anyway, I've been watering them regularly during this heatwave, but one of the pair is absolutely fine, and the other is looking less than fine at the moment. When I checked the poorly one, I noticed that there was some undrained-away water in the pot, so poured that off. Can anyone please help by explaining why one of them is so sorry-looking and the other one is just fine ... and any advice as to how I can bring the poorly one back to good health, please - help would be greatly appreciated. I would think the undrained water is what did the damage depending how long it had been like that. Last week I did the same to my Orchid and had a fit when I saw the brimming water. I quickly drained it and luckily no harm done.
