This article is from an American site...where they get a lot more heat and sun than we do. It might be helpful.

I had great success when I added water retaining granuals to my hanging baskets, also I added a 330ml empty coke bottle with a few holes poked in to it so once filled it dripped keeping them moist

I used to have trailing begonias in my hanging baskets. They were a great success.

The key with any hanging basket is regular watering.  Mr BM produces fantastic displays, but he waters them daily.

His trailing begonias last year were really something else.

Agreed, barmaid.  Mine were spectacular last year (a bit of a mix of begonias and fuchsias) but watering was onerous during the long dry spell.

I would add that I have grown strawberries in hanging baskets and the results were disappointing. The watering problem, obviously, but then they were attacked by very happy birds who loved the handy addition to their diet!

Trailing petunias can be a great look, even better if you keep on top of the dead heading, and like always with basket plants keeping them feed and watered is a must.

Nasturtiums are easy, just plant a few seeds in the baskets and watch them romp away!

And save the nasturtium seeds and pickle them like capers. And put nasturtium leaves and flowers in salads.
