Flowering Shrubs For Shade Please

My daughter has a shady bed in her garden  ,the soil is slightly acidic  and she would like some suggestions for a couple of not too tall flowering shrubs, my suggestions ( turned down) Camellia ( too expensive and becomes too tall), Kalmia ....too much like Laurel.Any ideas welcome.Thanks .

we have had one for more than 40 years in a dark north facing bit of the garden, it is absolutely full of flowers now

Dogwood, ferns, hostas, azaleas ?
