fruit flies?

we have strawberry plants but they are covered in tiny black flies - fruit flies? they r doing my head in any suggestions on how to get rid of them? thanx xXx

They are tiny but collectively look awful - sometimes a whole piece of stem will be totally black. I make up jugs of soapy water (washing up liquid) which kills them. In the good old days when you could use a hosepipe, I could then wash them off but now I have to wipe them off with a piece of kitchen towel. If they are on the actual fruit, you may not feel like pouring soapy on them though.
