I have 2 large conifer trees that have been blown down in the recent gales, can I shread the smaller branches and use as a mulch across the garden

Yes, you can indeed use it as a mulch. We do this a lot where I work but its best not to use it fresh, just stack it in a heap for about 6-8 weeks til all the heat has gone out of it and any funfi has had time to do its bit and it can be used as a mulch under shrubs etc to supress weed growth and retain moisture.
Being conifer chips, it may lower the PH level some and make it a bit more acid but if this is not a problem with what you are growing, then yes, go for it. Good Luck Tbird+
