Today I Heard My First . . . . .
ChatterBank0 min ago
I have goldfish about to winter for the first time in an outside pond. I've read that they shouldn't be fed when the temperature drops below 5c because they'll be dormant. The question is should I stop feeding them when they stop eating because they're dormant - or do they become dormant when I stop feeding them?
In other words are they stocking up as long as there's food or should I stop feeding them so they can go dormant? I do understand that, although the air temperature may drop below 5c, the water temperature will drop later but I could do with some clues & views.
Thanks.

Start reducing their feed now because as the weather gets colder the fish a less active and whatever food is left uneaten will rot in on the bottom. My dad has two ponds and at this time of year he only feeds half the usual amount every other day, then continues reducing this to nothing by the time there are frosts. He doesn't start feeding them the fish again till the weather warms in the spring.
Remember to make sure there is an air hole in the pond if it freezes.... He uses polystyrene 'igloos' from the pet shop. This allows any toxic gases to escape and fresh air to enter.... without this the fish will suffocate.
Hope this helps and good luck
at this time of year, i tend to put in a small amount of food, just as a tester to see how active the fish are. If they don't seem hungry, then don't feed them. If, however, they still contest for food, feed them an appropriate amount.
TIP: a Tennis ball will float on top of the pond all winter and stop it icing over fully, and is a cheaper alternative to pet shop 'igloos'
Thanks, both. Good advice all round. I remember about maintaining an airhole from Blue Peter Garden days long past and the grand ceremony of the placing of the ball each year. There's a waterfall pump going all the time that should allay at least some of the freezing but I'll be be keeping an eye out.
Thanks again.
