Blanket Weed

We are troubled with blanket weed in our pond and cannot seem to get rid of it with the propriety liquids on sale, but we are also worred about using anything to harsh because of the fish in the pond. Has anyone got any ideas of how to get a clear pond again.

My pond is only a small one so this advice may not work for you. I do 3 things. First i stop feeding the fish for a while so they eat out of the pond which reduces additional fish waste and makes the water less fertile. I hand remove as much blanket weed as I can, but i leave it in bucket of water bu the side of the pond in case there are baby fish or insects in it. Then I add more plants to take up some of the excess water nitrate which makes the blanket weed grow. I actually like to have duckweed on my pond as it is easy to control and good competition for the blanket weed. You can get an ultra violet light to add to your filter system that deals with single cell algae but I am not sure how effective they are on thread algae. anyway more advice here

The advice given is sound. In addition we put in a block of barley straw. this will float on the surface intially, then as it becomes wet through, it gradually sinks. Submerged it starts to rot giving off a gas, sorry can't remember which, this helps to clear the weed. The barley straw is available at nurseries selling aquatic supplies or at some pet shops.A block of straw remains effective for about six months after it becomes submerged

hi,we had the same problem with blanket weed it can be hard to rid your pond of it,but we have managed it.Firstly if you can,is empty and keep as much as the water as you can,we used a pump and kids small swimming pool,then clean the sides with scratchy pads,then refill your pond with the original water and top up with tap water or if you have enough rainwater from butts even better.Then I treated it with a product called "no more blanket weed"this was the only product that worked for us,you will have to do it more than once and it's no good putting it in when there is waves of blanket weed this stuff is more as a preventive than a cure,probably take three goes but it will be worth it,you don't say if you have fish we have Koi,Tench and Rudd and it never bothered them,hope you pond isn't too big as it is not a cheap product

i had terrible problems with blanket weed but it dissappeared on its own when i installed a u.v. filter to combat green water, not sure if it was a coincidence or not
