privet hedge

My neighbour set a privet hedge between our gardens I cut my side but the top is growing tall and straggly and he does not seem to want to cut it.Am i allowed to cut the top? I t is about 4ft

Yes ! Anything that grows on your side of the boundry can be cut off but if he wants the cuttings he can have them. The same thing applies to tree branches that overhang your garden.
If you don't like the hedge you can put up a fence on your side up to 2m tall.
I have a similar problem but I like the hedge which is about 4ft thick but I cut it off at a height of 5ft but he doesn't and so there is a step up on his side . .
