How to kill a large Prunus tree, stone dead!

I cut down a large Prunus in my garden, but the shoots continue to pop up all over the garden, up to four or five yards away. How long does it take for the entire root system to die and stop popping shoots up. I cut the tree down a month ago and have since treated the stump with timbrel,

Drill several 8-10mm holes as deep as possible into the trunk base.
Keep filling with SBK and plugging the top of the holes.
You can't kill a tree like that in 5 minutes. More like 5 months.
