local DIY superstore sell battery operated scarers which emit a high pitched noise we cannot here and keeps them opit of the garden. You will probably find you need 2 to cover the whole garden. About £20 each. Probably find them if you search online.

Don't know if you can still get it but you can get stuff with lion poo in it which is supposed to put the cats off.

I take it that it isn't your cat. The pets problem page in the Scottish Sunday Mail had this question today - it is a very common (and, no doubt, annoying) problem.

The vet said that the two best deterrents were (1) a dog or (2) soak them with a water pistol or whatever you can set up in the garden.

Some of the other deterrents work - but not all of them all of the time.

Get some menthol crystals from a chemist and sprinkle them where cats poo.

Sonic deterrents are ineffective, as sherrardk said, go to your garden centre and look for the dried pellets scented with Lion poo.

My cats like chilli, sorry - mamary, is there a particular place they go, nice soft soil? Stick a pot on that place, or some nice prickly twigs.

canary - much as I like to add a bit of humour to every situation if you posted that comment over in animals and nature you would get lynched. Anti-freeze is lethal to cats and cats drink it because it tastes sweet.

I think that motion detectors setting off garden sprinklers would be the ultimate deterrent. It would be fun to watch too.

daoji - my boy cat loves curry sauce and prawn crackers from the chinese take away. They, like us, have developed individual tastes.... so why not chilli??

As deterrents they have repeatedly proven effective.
