Waste Disposal Unit Cleaning

We have an Insinkerator waste disposal unit fitted to the kitchen sink. The receptacle at the bottom of the inlet hole contains three rotating blades bolted to the bottom of the receptacle itself. Although the blades a clean, the bottom of the receptacle is covered with a brown layer of muck.
What's the best thing to pour down there to dissolve this stuff? Could I use drain cleaner? The waste disposal unit is smell-free.

Thank you.

Can you use something like Mr Muscle sink unblocker? I find it brilliant on sink outlets.
Q: What if waste is left in the disposer?

A: Put in some bi-carbonate of soda (baking soda) to freshen it up. For extra freshness, try grinding a lemon or citrus fruit for a few seconds without water. Do not put bleach into the disposer.
