I've been to Scotland - so 'Wine of the Week' has had a tartan makeover for this edition :+)

Four Scotches - all Malts - all in my cupboard at the moment and all excellent in their different ways.

Two bargains from from mainstream supermarkets and two currently on offer at the Co-op.

In ascending price order :

Aldi - Glen Orrin - a blended malt at the astonishing price of £13.29

It's mainly Highland/Speyside Malts (I think) and is as smooth as a baby's bottom - no peat, no iodine, nothing to scare the horses - just a gentle malt for sipping

Morrisons - Ledaig - Single Malt from Tobermory - £18.99

Loads of peat and seaside flavours (without being overly medicinal) - quite young and a bit fiery - a small drop of water just eases it back. If I smoked, I'd say it would go well with a small cigar :)

The Co-op - Aberlour - Highland Single Malt - 10yo - £21.99
The Co-op - Jura - Origin - 10yo - £27.99

Two real bargains from the Co-op - both reduced by around £8 - £10 from usual prices. I think it's a national offer - don't shoot me if it isn't.

The Aberlour is very gentle - rounded and mellow - good in a toddy too.

The Jura 'Origin' is their least peated Malt - but still has plenty of Island character - you can smell the sea in every glass. I think it also has a tang of liquorice in there somewhere - but that may just be me.

I also bought a couple of more exotic Malts when I was in Scotland (non-chill-filtered, elderly, single cask bottlings - a Bunnahabhain and a Highland Park) - but I haven't explored them properly yet. Perhaps next time.

Sadly no Aldi, Morrisons or Co-Op here!
Perfect timing Dave. I need something smooth to splash about this weekend, I'll give Glen Orrin a bash.
Ta.
I thought that Piggynose was our new expert on whisky ;-)

As I get older (if that's actually possible!), my taste in whisky seems to be changing. I used to love the really peaty single malts, such as Laphroaig, but I can't handle it now, so perhaps I'll try one of your recommendations at Christmas (which, these days, is usually the only time I touch the hard stuff).
Ledaig is very good, open it out with a very small splash of room temperature water...as noted young ones can be fiery.
Jura - The Origin.... very good value whisky, small piece of ice opens it out lovely but is just as nice without.... lovely stuff
Not a Highland Park fan, like many Speysides it's a bit bland unless you aim for an old 'un
Now in the Bunahabain you have a little sweety, deep peaty real tang of the sea in this one with out being even slightly medicinal. Doesn't need anything at all to help it down.

I have these at home and a 25yo bunahabain into the bargain.... that's very very special... some nice choices
Chris, if you like island malts, try some of the Bruichladdich malts, bit more subtle bit less heavy on the peat like a Lagavuilin ( my favourite 16yo ;0) )
Soz that should read UNlike Lagavuilin.... it;'s just smoke in a bottle!! Awesome stuff

Slappy :

These are the two Malts I bought last week - from Royal Mile Whiskies in Pitlochry :

I've had just a wee taste of the Bunnahabhain (very promising indeed) but haven't broached the HP yet.
Evening, Dave.....I broke MrG's heart making toddies using his whiskey/whisky......

But I agree...the Glen Orrin is a fantastic drink...and thanks for the Co-op tip.....Aberlour and Jura......a nice end to the evening......and at that price....☺
I bloody love Highland Park.
The Highland Park is one of my favs, dave.. thanks for the tip on the Aberlour....
Do they have Tomatin on offer?
Question Author
Nope - the only other Co-op offer on Malts seems to be Laphroaig at £33 for the basic 10yo cooking model - which isn't that much of a bargain.
Giz a slug, Slappy :-)

Thing I'll get a bottle of that Glen Orrin tomorrow, Dave.
Tony, Get one for me
No.... very special occasions that fellow!!

This is nice if you like Tomatin, the Cu Bocan

Will do, may have to sample it first though just to make sure it's up to scratch you understand, Psybbo.
I understand Tone, you are my official taster
Don't think I've ever drank any whiskey thats been matured in a sherry cask, Slappy.
Bit too posh for my Co-op.
