Electric Light Problem

I have a kitchen light that suddenly stopped working. On inspection, the tube was blackened at one end, so I took it to the shop to match it with the correct replacement (28w Osram CFL square)type.
When I fitted the new one, I was surprised that it wasn't working (not even a flicker) and now through the process of elimination, I'm trying to determine whether there is a fault with the new 'bulb' or could it be the starter or perhaps something else ?.

TIA.

Change the starter as well.....or with the light on try removing it and then putting it back in.
There is a chance that the circuit fuse may have blown.

Is every other lighting fitting working ?
If the tube blows the starter often goes as well. Best to change both at the same time.

Thanks all.
I'll buy a new starter, when I can get down to the shop, and hope that dose the trick :-)
Make sure you get the correctly rated starter Chip.
P.S. Just been watching the most beautiful Bullfinch. Superb colouring.
Are you sure you were given the correct lamp...some have 2 pins and some have 4 pins...take it out and have a look.

Thanks again all.
Yes I'm sure its the right lamp, its a 4 prong one.
I bought a new starter today, fitted it but still no joy!
Looked at the fuse box and it all looks fine in there.
I'll be calling an electrician out tomorrow.
Check that all's well in the switch first.

Thank you, to all who gave help and advice!
The sparks guy came and fitted a widget called a 'balist', all ok now.
I have just googled "Balist", and the word doesn't appear to exist in English as we know it !
Ah....that widget !

Yes Mikey, the one you have never heard of!
No...I hadn't heard of a balist !

And still haven't !

Glad you got it fixed Chippy !
We used to call them a choke, Chip..... That would have been my next check but I missed the follow up posts. Glad you are sorted......let there be light. :))
