A friend of mine has been painting some lovely pictures over the years. The girl with the pearl earring being one of them. That of course is hanging on his wall.

Then he has done a sad clown (brilliant). I know he has many more paintings and he has not mentioned selling them per se. But if I saw one that I liked, like how much money would we be talking about as I don't have the faintest. That is of course if he would sell it to me.

It would depends how big they were, how long he spent painting and how he personally felt about the painting.

Some people just enjoy painting and aren't interested in the finished product. A man my wife worked with was like that. He asked her to bring in a slide we'd taken of a favourite place so she took in one of Eilean Donan Castle and he painted it for her free of charge; it hangs with pride in our living room. If you show an interest in his paintings he might offer to sell you one at a nominal cost; if it's too expensive you can always refuse it.

Just say you like it very much and would he be willing to sell it to you. And ask him approximately how much he would want. Good luck.

When I was younger my housemate painted pictures. My then boyfriend bought one from her for £5. That was 30 years ago, though. So probably no much help. Might give you an estimation.

I agree with Mex. That said many inexperienced sellers ask far less than something would otherwise be sold for. One only appreciates the true worth of ones efforts through experience.

My friends daughter is an artist and her work sells from approx £75 to £300. Prints less of course.

The price would be up to him. Art sells for what the buyer thinks it's worth.

thanks for the answers. his brother is also an artist and last year had an exhibition of his art in a gallery - just another question - can you buy the paintings from the art gallery.

you can but unless the artist is very well known and only sells through a gallery for provenance purposes then it usually cost more than buying directly from the artist

I paint. Watercolour, acrylics, and oil. I will not sell any of my paintings. I find it hard enough to give them away:-)

I used to paint acrylics. Loved it. Not touched them for over two years. The family hang a few of them.
Must take it up again, very relaxing and therapeutic.

JJ, I would suggest you just tell him you would like to buy one and ask for a price. It is impossible for us really to guess. I have had some artwork very cheaply, purely through knowing the artist ( and I wasn't expecting to). So I would contact him directly.
