water is leaking from where the cold water hose screws onto the pipe. But water is only leaking when the washing machine is spinning out waste water - what would cause this?

have sorted it !
What was it, a loose connection or damaged rubber joint and the vibration during the spinning cycle made it leak.

well it was actually 2 things. the cold water pipe was leaking which was fixed. to my dismay 2 hours later the kitchen was afloat again. the waste water pipe sits in an open ended vertical waste pipe which had got clogged up over the years and was overflowing each time waste water was spun out. we've put some mr muscle drain cleaner in it and will put the waste pipe into the sink for now!
My neighbour had a similar problem. What I did to cure it was, cut the bottom of a balloon, then fit the blowing up end on to the washing machine hose and stretch the other end over the waste pipe. It stopped any back splash. ( Technical term ).
