I have to buy a new fridge freezer and was thinking of having a frost free one but in conversation I was told not to buy one.I have been to 2 shops today haveing a look and out of 20 freezers in one shop there were 3 frost free ones and probably more than 40 in another big store there were 4 frost free ones.Would be grateful on any advice on these and from anyone with frost free freezers. Thanks

First, the way the "frost free" device works requires an actual heating coil or lamps. This uses quite a lot of energy and if you compare the cost of operation of a fridge without frost free vs. one with, you'd be surprised at the savings without it. Secondly. again, related to the way the frost free option works, is the fact that a sensor allows the heat producing element to heat the freezer side to about 32 degrees F before shuting it off and allowing the freezer to resume cooling at about 25 to 28 degrees F. During this heating period, the food stored also begins to reach 32 degrees F. This is one of the major causes of "freezer burn" and can contribute to a shorter acceptable life of frozen foods. Lastly (I know I said two), most people don't clean and empty the tray under the fridge into which the thawed frost from the freezer drains. It then sits under the fridge in a warm dark environment perfect for the growth of nasty smelling mold and fungus. This is usually the cause of folks complaining about terrible smells coming from their refrigerators. I still think they are more convenient that fridges without the feature, but that's our choice... others may willingly accept the interminable defrosting required of units not so equipped...
I've had an LG frost free Fridge/Freezer for about the last 4 years and have had no problems.. It's quiet and I don't have the bother of defrosting it What more could you ask.. I don't know what Clanad is referring to " a tray under the fidge where the thawed water goes" as I don't have one.. And mine has a quick freeze button which comes in handy and a vacation button which means it doesn't use so much energy while you're away as the door is'nt constantly being opened..
