washing machine descaler

I've heard of a product that is better than Calgon and wondered if any of you have heard of it
This product is used once a month in an unloaded washer on a hot cycle - It is said that this product doesn't damage your washer in some ways as Calgon is alleged to do.
A Washing Machine Engineer told my mate about it - Any ideas?

My washing macine repair man sold me a product that you describe but you have to get it from them as there isn`t a web site on the box. It`s just called Limescale and Detergent Remover and cost`s �10.00. Recommended by all machine manufacturers. It is just as good if you put some cheap washing powder in an empty machine and give it a `hot` wash on `60` degree`s.

I've always just put washing soda, 1 to 2 tablespoons, in with every wash & I've never needed to 'clean' limescale from my machine.

You shouldnt need descaler. Not if you use the right amount of powder everytime you wash. Powder contains its own product that prevents limescale

We are in a hard water area, but a washing machine engineer told me not to bother with Calgon.

It is quite expensive, and he said save that money towards a replacement machine.

However he advised putting a large dose of cheap washing soda in once a month, in an empty machine on a very hot wash. This also helps clear out the slime that 'er indoors causes by overdosing the Lenor.
