Also talking to your neighbour before you put in for planning permission is very wise as it could save you a lot of time and trouble if there are objections.

Philtaz, it seems from what you say I have got the length for the garage, but it's doubtful about the width. I had thought about a utility room and probably would have had that at the end of the garage. As I want to add value to my house I will still think about the utility room.
Jake, as my house is at the end of a terrace and is next to a public footpath I dont anticipate any problems with regard to light obstruction but I understand your point and will still check with the planning department.
